Anticonvulsant Activity of Methanol Extract of Zizyphi Spinosi Semen in Mice

The anticonvulsant effects of the methanol extract from Zizyphi Spinosi Semen (MEZSS) wereinvestigated on multiple seizure models induced by strychnine, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) and picrotoxin respectively in mice. The rate of survival, seizure score, latency to convulsion and weight loss induced by convulsant agents were evaluated with or without pretreatment of the methanol extract. All convulsant agents induced seizures in 80-100% of animals, while pretreatment of methanol extract of MEZSS (25, 50, 100 mg/kg) significantly inhibited convulsion severity and death number in all acutely induced seizure models. MEZSS also significantly increased the latency to onset
convulsion and decreased weight loss, as compared to control group. These results indicate that MEZSS has anticonvulsant effects as reducing seizure severity or death number and increasing latency to convulsion in mice. It is also suggested that MEZSS might exert its anticonvulsant effects.
